A couple days ago I read It’s Not the End of the World (But You Can See it From Here), a Merthur fic based on the movie 2012. I think the most terrifying thing about it was how the world ended. Aliens and monsters can be relegated to the world of fantasy and shut off but the fact that the planet can turn against us (much as it has though I doubt the film makers predicted it would that way)...
